Hospitality is the beginning of community. Hospitality is a risk. It makes the giver and receiver both vulnerable; open to both pain and growth. Jesus instructs his followers to show hospitality toward the poor and those who are marginalized (Luke 14:12-14). This is a movement beyond mere charity. It is a choice to accompany the marginalized through their stories and engage in an on-ongoing, shared relationship between rich and poor (James 2:1-7). Advocacy organizations have become popular in our society and volunteerism is on the rise. For all of the great work being done, these do not address the need of walking with and loving the poor in relationships of hospitality. The Listen project seeks to meet this need by creating spaces for accompaniment and friendship with the poor.
